Where to Propose in Puerto Vallarta: 10 Spots Only a Local Knows
Ten places to propose in Puerto Vallarta, from Los Arcos to San Sebastián, with the details guidebooks skip.

Puerto Vallarta has a bay that faces west, mountains that drop straight into the ocean, and a sunset that lands on the water almost every night of the dry season. That combination makes it one of the easiest places in Mexico to find a setting for a proposal. The hard part is choosing one that fits the two of you, not the one every travel list repeats.
Here are ten spots worth knowing, from the famous to the quieter ones, with the practical details that guidebooks tend to skip.
1. Los Arcos lookout, south of town
The rock arches of Los Arcos rise out of the water near Mismaloya, and the road south along Highway 200 has several pull-offs that look straight at them. Late afternoon light turns the rocks gold. It works best for couples who like a view more than a crowd, and it pairs well with dinner at one of the hillside restaurants nearby.
Good to know: traffic on the coastal road can slow down at sunset, so plan to arrive early.
2. The Malecón at golden hour
The seaside boardwalk downtown is the heart of Vallarta: bronze sculptures, street performers, and a long open view of the bay. It is lively, which suits couples who enjoy energy and want the moment to feel like part of the city.
Good to know: it gets busy on weekends and holidays. If you want privacy, pick a weekday and the northern end, away from the arches by the main square.
3. Mirador Cerro de la Cruz
A climb of a few hundred steps from the old town takes you to a lookout with a white cross and a view over the rooftops, the cathedral crown and the whole bay. The walk itself gives a natural reason to "go see the view."
Good to know: bring water and go before sunset. The stairs are steep, so this one fits active couples.
4. Playa Conchas Chinas
Just south of the Zona Romántica, Conchas Chinas is a small beach with rock pools and calmer water. It feels tucked away even though it is minutes from town.
Good to know: access is through small paths between buildings, and high tide covers part of the sand. Check the tide chart for your date.
5. A private terrace facing the cathedral
The crown of the Our Lady of Guadalupe church is the symbol of Puerto Vallarta, and several homes and boutique properties in the hills above downtown look right at it with the bay behind. It is one of the most photographed backdrops in the city for a reason.
Good to know: most of these terraces are private, so you need a reservation or a planner who has access.
6. Playa Las Ánimas
South of Boca de Tomatlán, Las Ánimas is a beach with no road access. You reach it by water taxi or by a coastal hiking trail. Palapa restaurants line the sand and the water is calm most of the year.
Good to know: water taxi schedules end in the late afternoon, so a sunset proposal here needs a return plan.
7. Vallarta Botanical Garden
About thirty minutes south in the jungle, the botanical garden has orchid houses, river views and shaded paths. It is a good choice for couples who prefer greenery to sand, or who want a daytime proposal without strong sun.
Good to know: it closes before sunset, so plan your moment for the morning or early afternoon.
8. Isla Río Cuale
This small island in the river that splits downtown is full of trees, footbridges and quiet corners. It is easy to reach on a casual walk and rarely feels crowded.
Good to know: it is a better fit for an intimate moment than for a big setup.
9. San Sebastián del Oeste
A former mining town about an hour and a half into the Sierra Madre, San Sebastián has cobblestone streets, a colonial plaza and cool mountain air. Old haciendas in the area make a rustic, romantic setting far from the beach crowds.
Good to know: the road is winding. Plan a full day and leave space for lunch in town.
10. Punta Mita and the Riviera Nayarit beaches
North of the bay, Punta Mita and the beaches around it offer long stretches of sand, resort terraces and some of the quietest sunsets on the coast.
Good to know: it is about forty-five minutes from downtown, so check transport before you choose it.
How to choose between them
Ask three questions:
- Do you want people around or not? The Malecón has energy. Conchas Chinas and the private terraces have calm.
- Is your partner a beach person, a view person or a garden person? Pick the setting they would choose for a normal day out.
- What time of day? Sunset is the classic, but some of these spots close early or get crowded right then.
