Best Places to Propose in Mexico (and Why Puerto Vallarta Wins)
Tulum, Cancún, Cabo, San Miguel, Oaxaca, Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta compared for a proposal trip.

Mexico is one of the most popular countries in the world for destination proposals. It is close to the United States and Canada, it has two coasts and a long list of colonial cities, and most of it is warm when the rest of North America is cold. Choosing where to ask comes down to the kind of trip the two of you enjoy.
Here are the places couples choose most, what each one does well, and where each one falls short.
Tulum
Best for: jungle style, beach clubs and Mayan ruins by the sea.
Tulum has a strong visual identity: wooden boutique hotels, white sand and the ruins on the cliff above the Caribbean. It photographs beautifully.
Keep in mind: sargassum seaweed can cover the beaches for parts of spring and summer, prices have risen fast, and the main beach road is crowded. Sunsets happen behind you, over the jungle, not over the water.
Cancún and the Riviera Maya
Best for: all-inclusive resorts and easy logistics.
Direct flights from almost everywhere and turquoise water make Cancún the simplest choice on paper. Resorts handle a lot for you.
Keep in mind: the Caribbean coast faces east, so there are no sunsets over the ocean. Resort proposals can feel similar from one couple to the next, and sargassum affects this coast too.
Los Cabos
Best for: dramatic desert and ocean scenery, high-end resorts.
The rock arch at Land's End and the meeting of desert and sea make Cabo striking. It has excellent luxury hotels.
Keep in mind: many beaches have strong currents and are not safe for swimming, and the area is expensive. The town itself has less local character than older cities.
San Miguel de Allende
Best for: colonial streets, rooftops and a cool climate.
The pink stone parish church and cobblestone streets make San Miguel one of the most romantic cities in the country. Rooftop terraces at sunset are a classic.
Keep in mind: there is no beach, the nearest airports are over an hour away, and winter nights get cold.
Oaxaca
Best for: food, culture and couples who love craft and tradition.
Oaxaca offers markets, mezcal, colorful streets and some of the best food in Mexico.
Keep in mind: it is inland, and the Pacific beaches of the state are a long drive or a small flight away.
Mexico City
Best for: city lovers, museums and fine dining.
Parks like Chapultepec, the canals of Xochimilco and world-class restaurants make the capital a good fit for urban couples.
Keep in mind: it is big, busy and at high altitude, and quiet private corners take work to find.
Puerto Vallarta
Best for: sunsets over the ocean, variety and a real Mexican town.
Puerto Vallarta sits on Banderas Bay, one of the largest bays in North America, and it faces west. That means the sun sets over the water almost every evening of the dry season, from November to May. Within an hour you have beaches, jungle rivers, private terraces facing the cathedral crown and mountain towns like San Sebastián del Oeste.
The old town keeps its cobblestone streets and tile roofs, the Malecón is walkable, and the city is known for being friendly to every kind of couple, including LGBTQ+ couples. Direct flights connect it with dozens of cities in the United States and Canada, many under four hours.
Keep in mind: summer, from June to October, is hot and humid, with afternoon storms. The dry season is the classic proposal window.
Why Puerto Vallarta wins for most couples
If you compare them side by side, Puerto Vallarta is the one place that combines:
- Ocean sunsets, which the Caribbean coast cannot offer.
- Calm, swimmable water in much of the bay, unlike many Cabo beaches.
- Real local character, with a historic center instead of only a hotel zone.
- Variety in a small radius: beach, jungle, mountains and city in one trip.
- Easy access from the United States and Canada.
